Data Center Technician
Location: Alabama (On-Site)
About the Opportunity
Our client, a leading hyperscale data center operator, is seeking a Data Center Technician to support the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and expansion of its mission-critical facilities in Alabama. This role is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting structured cabling and network infrastructure while ensuring maximum uptime across a high-availability data center environment.
The ideal candidate has experience working within enterprise or hyperscale data centers and is comfortable supporting critical infrastructure in a 24/7 operational environment. Key Responsibilities
- Install, terminate, label, test, and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cabling throughout the data center.
- Perform structured cabling installations including patch panels, cross-connects, ladder rack, fiber raceway, cabinets, and cable management systems.
- Provision and maintain network connectivity between servers, switches, routers, storage, and telecommunications equipment.
- Execute remote hands requests including server reboots, hardware installations, cable moves, equipment swaps, and basic troubleshooting.
- Test and certify copper and fiber cabling using industry-standard testing equipment.
- Troubleshoot Layer 1 connectivity issues including fiber loss, cable faults, termination issues, and signal degradation.
- Install, support, and document Main Distribution Frames (MDF), Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDF), and Meet-Me Rooms (MMR).
- Maintain accurate documentation of cabling, power circuits, rack elevations, and infrastructure changes.
- Monitor environmental systems, alarms, cooling equipment, and electrical infrastructure while escalating issues as needed.
- Assist with vendor coordination and support maintenance activities for mission-critical facility equipment.
- Perform equipment installations including cabinets, racks, servers, network devices, and related hardware.
- Ensure all work complies with industry standards, company procedures, and data center best practices.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and secure work environment.
- Support site security procedures by escorting vendors and authorized visitors when required.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and provide after-hours support during maintenance windows or critical events.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of experience supporting enterprise, colocation, or hyperscale data center environments.
- Strong understanding of structured cabling systems including:
- Copper (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A)
- Single-mode and multi-mode fiber
- Patch panels, cross-connects, ladder rack, and fiber management systems
- Experience testing and troubleshooting fiber optic and copper cabling.
- Familiarity with network infrastructure including switches, routers, and Layer 1 network topology.
- Working knowledge of ANSI/TIA structured cabling standards and industry best practices.
- Experience reading cable layouts, rack elevations, and infrastructure documentation.
- Basic understanding of critical facility infrastructure including UPS systems, generators, HVAC, electrical distribution, and cooling systems is preferred.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and Visio is a plus.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in confined spaces, on ladders, or under raised flooring when necessary.
- Must be willing to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating on-call coverage.
Preferred Qualifications
- BICSI Technician or Installer Certification
- Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certification
- Low Voltage or Structured Cabling Certifications
- Fiber splicing experience
- Experience supporting hyperscale, cloud, or enterprise data center environments
- Experience working in mission-critical or 24/7 operations
